Ned R. Hickel, a Parkersburg native and a Marietta High School graduate, earned nine letters before graduating from MC in 1936- three each in football, basketball and baseball. He was a forward on the Pioneer's Ohio Athletic Conference championship basketball team in 1935-36, but his greatest recognition came on the gridiron.

A talented quarterback and halfback, he captained the Pioneers football team his senior year. His abilities earned him the respect of the legendary Dom Drumm, who named Hickel one of the school's finest football players of any era. Hickel also was selected in 1983 to the national Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity's list of all-time football greats. He was also a member of that group at MC.

As a student, Hickel was active in campus affairs, serving as president of the college's student council and the student body president. Following graduation from Marietta he continued his education a Tufts University and served one year there as assistant varisty and freshman basketball coach.

Hickel served in the Army during World War II, rising to the rank of major and earning a purple heart and a bronze star for heroism.

A retired employee of the Exxon Corp., he has lived in Baton Rouge, La. for many years and has been active in a number of community organizations, including the Boy Scouts and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
