He joins nine teammates in the Hall of Fame including fellow 1985 graduates Monte Duncan and Terry Mulholland. Hefner was a member of the 1983 National Championship team, as well as the 1984 and 1985 National Runner Up teams. 1985 was his breakout year as he led the Ohio Athletic Conference with a .416 batting average and 63 runs batted in. Hefner was named first team All-OAC, All-Mideast Region and All-American in 1985. Hefner was at his best on the biggest stage. He tied the NCAA Division III World Series record with five hits in a game in 1985 and he is also tied for the most hits in a World Series with 12 in the 1983 series, earning World Series All-Tournament honors. One of the best defensive first basemen to ever wear the Pinstripes, Hefner ranks among the program leaders in putouts in a season and for a career.

Hefner earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering from Marietta and completed a Masters of Science in Petroleum Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He was inducted into the Marietta College Petroleum Engineering and Geology Hall of Fame in 2014. Heffner started his own company, Blue & Gray Resources, Inc., in 1996 and sold it to Anadarko Petroleum in 2011. Hefner currently lives in Parker, Colo. with his wife Kris. They have two sons, John and Bryce.
