Nuckles, who is deceased, amassed six varsity letters in football and crew. He was a member of the “M” Club, the Varsity Boat Club, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, and he was also class treasurer his senior year.
As a tackle on the Pioneer football team, Nuckles was a part of the 1936 Ohio Conference Champion squad that went 5-2. He also played in the 1935 game versus Bowling Green, in which Marietta was victorious 31-0. That game has been coined as one of the greatest victories in Pioneer football history.
On the crew team, Nuckles, or otherwise known as “Iron Man Nuckles,” rowed in the five seat. He rowed in Philadelphia at the Dad Vail Championships in 1935 against such schools as Dartmouth, Manhattan, Rutgers, and Pennsylvania. After graduating from Marietta, Nuckles worked for the Department of Justice, dealing with immigration. He later became the Chief of Police in Elkins, W.Va. Nuckles is survived by his wife Jean, who lives in Elkins, and his daughter Catherine.
