Yazombek’s most memorable accomplishment during his time in pinstripes was his selection as the Most Valuable Player of the 1975 World Series. Yazombek, who was raised in Shadyside,Ohio, batted 9-for-17 (.529) with five runs, five RBI, two doubles and two home runs in the World Series. His offensive success and his outstanding play behind the plate made him a rare MVP, since the Pioneers finished second to Florida Southern in 1975.
Yazombek was a three-year letterwinner for the Pioneers. The Pioneer catcher was selected first team All-Mideast Region and third team All-American in 1975. He also received second team All-OAC honors as a senior in 1976.
Yazombek returned to MC in 1980 and served as an assistant baseball coach from 1980-82. He was part of the coaching staff that helped lead Marietta College to its first National Championship in 1981.
Yazombek and his wife Patricia reside in Marietta and he is an executive vice president of mortgage lending at Peoples Bank in Marietta.
