Donald David Drumm a 1915 graduate, is perhaps the name most often associated with Marietta College athletics. During his playing days he earned 18 varsity letters, then went on to play professional football with the Canton Bulldogs as a tackle. He played with and against some of the legends of football, including Jim Thorpe. Drumm spent a total of 42 years at Marietta College as a player and coach, and was director of athletics from 1947 until his retirement in 1959. He undoubtedly touched the lives of more Pioneer student athletes than any other person. Marietta's football field is named in his honor. He died in 1968.
