Hall of Fame
Michael Moffitt earned four varsity letters in tennis while wearing the Navy Blue and White from 1988-91. He becomes the third tennis player inducted into the Hall of Fame. Moffitt is widely recognized as the greatest men’s tennis player in Marietta College history. He played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles his entire career and was runner up in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in singles (1991) and doubles (1990), with partner Tim Ranson ‘90. In addition, he served as team captain in all four seasons. As impressive as Moffitt was on the court, he was equally outstanding in the classroom. Moffitt was a two-time Academic All-American, Phi Beta Kappa and his class Valedictorian.
Moffitt, who graduated with a degree in History and minors in Asian Studies and Political Science, is currently the Dean and a professor at the University of Oregon School of Law. Following his time at Marietta, Moffitt earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and clerked for a federal judge in Cleveland. After a stint working on international conflict resolution projects in 20 countries, he moved to Harvard to teach in the Law School. He joined the law faculty at Oregon in 2001 and became Associate Dean in 2008 and then Dean in 2011. Moffitt, a member of the Marietta College Board of Trustees, lives in Eugene, Ore. with his wife Jamie. They have two daughters, Sander and Spencer.
