CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team defeated Ohio Christian University, 9-0, Saturday (April 22) afternoon. With wins in three of their last four matches, the Pioneers are now 3-16 overall. Ohio Christian falls to 0-13 on the season.
Marietta picked up two quick wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. In the top spot,
Carey Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) downed Drayah Johnston and Katherine Lawless, 8-1, while
Spenser Jackson (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) and
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) were 8-0 winners over Javon Graham and Emily Miller at No. 3.
The Pioneers made it 3-0 after
Sarina Singh (Parkersburg, W.Va./Lawrenceville) and
Mandee Young (Poca, W.Va./Poca) took a hard-fought match from Erinn Bailey and Kaylee Dickson at No. 2 by the score of 8-6.
Becker made quick work of Johnston at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and 6-1. Straight-set wins at Nos. 2-4 secured the team win. At No. 2, Warvell defeated Lawless, 6-4 and 6-3. Singh won at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Miller, while Young topped Bailey at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-2.
In the No. 5 match, Jackson and Dickson spilt the first two sets. Dickson took the first set, 6-4, and Jackson won the second, 6-2. Jackson went on to win the tiebreaker 10-8 to win the match.
Stuart completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 against Graham.
