MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team beat rival Muskingum University, 9-0, Friday (April 14) morning at the Lindner Family Tennis Center near Cincinnati. The Pioneers lost their second match of the day to Ohio Northern University by the same 9-0 score.
Marietta is now 1-16 on the season and 1-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum falls to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play, while Ohio Northern is 17-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.
Four Pioneers notched their first career wins in the match against Muskingm.
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock),
Sarina Singh (), Spencer Jackson and
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) all picked up wins in singles play for Marietta.
Warvell beat Lindsay Brindack at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-2. Singh downed Kristen Chandler at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-2. Jackson and Stuart won at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Jackson topped Manda Gaeckle, 6-1 and 6-1, while Stuart blanked Jasmine Love, 6-0 and 6-0.
Carey Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) shutout Elizabeth Knauss at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 4,
Mandee Young (Poca, W.Va./Poca) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Sydney McDaniel, 6-0 and 6-1 to complete the sweep.
Marietta started the match by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Becker and Warvell beat Knauss and Chandler, 8-3. Singh and Young beat Brindack and McDaniel at No. 2, 8-2, while Jackson and
Erin Rogers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) topped Gaeckle and Love at No. 3, 8-0.
Ohio Northern opened its match against the Pioneers with a sweep of doubles. At No. 1, Christina Corbean and Brittany Toney defeated Becker and Warvell, 8-2. Singh and Young fell to Ola Latala and Ashley Ochsenhirt at No.2, 8-0. At No. 3, Mackenzie Wills and Katherine Curry were 8-0 winners over Jackson and Rogers.
The Polar Bears posted straight-set victories in each of the six singles matches for the clean sweep. At No. 1, Lynn Kelley beat Becker, 6-1 and 6-2. Latala beat Warvell at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-0, while Kaleigh Cummins took the No. 3 match from Singh, 6-0 and 6-1.
At No. 4, Wills defeated Young, 6-1 and 6-0. Curry was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Jackson at No. 5 and Jordan Dodson beat Stuart at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0.
