ADA, Ohio — No. 2 seed Ohio Northern University eliminated Marietta College, the No. 7 seed, from the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 win Tuesday (May 3) afternoon. The Pioneers finish the season with a 6-15 record, while the Polar Bears improve to 19-3 on the season.
ONU's No. 3 doubles team of Elise Smith and Kirsten Adamson got the Polar Bears on the board with an 8-0 win over
Mandee Young (Poca, W.Va./Poca) and
Megan Horsley (Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes). Brittany Toney and Meghan Letizia were close behind at No. 2 with an identical 8-0 victory against
Elyssa Ackerman (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) and
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch).
Lynn Kelly and Taryn Stromback completed the doubles sweep for Ohio Northern downing
Carey Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) at No. 1 by the score of 8-1.
Adamson claimed ONU's first singles point. She beat Horsley at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0. Letizia finished things off by topping Seals at No. 3 by the same score.
Ohio Northern advances to the semifinals on Friday where they will face No. 3 seed Otterbein, a 5-0 winner over No. 6 seeded Heidelberg in the quarterfinals.
