MARIETTA, Ohio — The University of Mount Union downed Marietta College by the score of 9-0 Wednesday (April 6) afternoon in women's tennis action. The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union improves to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
In the top doubles match, Gretchen Groves and Megan Reichert beat
Carey Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington), 8-1. At No. 2, Christina Nelson and Alix Stein were 8-3 winners over
Elyssa Ackerman (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur).
Megan Horsley (Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes) and
Mandee Young (Poca, W.Va./Poca) lost to Kayla Johnston and Ashley Gran at No. 3, 8-0.
The Purple Raiders posted straight-set victories in all six singles matches. Groves topped Becker at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-2. Johnston beat Ackerman at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1, while Nelson was a 6-4, 6-1 winner against Seals at No. 3.
At No. 4, Stein defeated Stankus, 6-1 and 6-0. Anna Nelson blamked Young at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-0, while Gran posted the same score against Horsley at No. 6.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (April 9) for a 1 p.m. match at Baldwin Wallace University.
