MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team lost to John Carroll University 7-0 Saturday (April 30) afternoon in the regular season finale for both schools. The Pioneers fall to 6-14 overall and 2-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks improve to 13-3 overall and 8-0 in conference play.
Marietta will be the No. 7 seed in next week's OAC Tournament. The Pioneers open tournament play at No. 2 seed Ohio Northern University on Tuesday (May 3) at 3:30 p.m.
The Blue Streaks swept all three doubles matches. Lauren O'Malley and Madisyn Rini downed
Carey Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) in the top spot, 8-0. At No. 2, Catherine Engel and Jennifer Stroyne were 8-2 winners over
Elyssa Ackerman (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur). Natalie Bourlas and Nicolette Bourlas took the No. 3 match from
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Mandee Young (Poca, W.Va./Poca), 8-0.
John Carroll posted four straight-set wins in singles to secure the team victory. At No. 1, O'Malley topped Becker, 6-1 and 6-0. Rini bested Ackerman at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-1.
Nicolette Bourlas and Engel both notched 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Bourlas beat Seals, while Engel downed Stankus.
Rain showers cut the match short as the bottom two singles matches never got started.
