ALLIANCE, Ohio — Marietta College dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference women's tennis match at the University of Mount Union by the score of 8-1 Wednesday (April 8) afternoon. The Pioneers are currently 2-10 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 8-5 on the season and 2-2 in the OAC.
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) continues to enjoy a stellar senior season for the Pioneers claiming Marietta's lone point of the day. Jeffery improved to 7-2 on the season with a victory at No. 5 singles. Jeffery downed Alix Stein, 6-1 and 6-2.
Mount Union swept the doubles play for the early 3-0 lead. MacKenzie Jenkins and Megan Reichert took the No. 1 match over
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat), 8-6. At No. 2, Stein and Mandy Wise were 8-1 winners against
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) and
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt).
Jeffery and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) fell at No. 3 to Taylor Dowling and Kayla Johnston, 8-4.
Jenkins and Wise won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Both posted 6-0, 6-0 shutouts. Jenkins beat Becker, while Wise defeated Gisser. At No. 3, Reichert was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Turner.
The Purple Raiders also claimed wins at Nos. 4 and 6 singles. Dowling beat Bush at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-1, while Johnston posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Stankus.
Marietta travels to Mason, Ohio for a pair of OAC matches this weekend. The Pioneers play Ohio Northern University and Heidelberg University on Saturday (April 11). The matches will be played at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, site of the OAC Championship.
