PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — The No. 6 seeded Marietta College women's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 5-0 loss at the University of Mount Union, seeded third, Wednesday (April 29) in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Marietta finishes the season with a 4-13 overall record, while the Purple Raiders improve to 14-5 on the season.
Mount Union's No. 2 doubles team of Mandy Wise and Alix Stein downed
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) and
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt), 8-1, for the first point of the match. MacKenzie Jenkins and Megan Reichert made it 2-0 with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat). Taylor Dowling and Kayla Johnston completed the doubles sweep by defeating Kelsey Jeffrey and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) at No. 3, 9-7.
The Purple Raiders got straight-set wins at the top two singles positions to secure the victory. Jenkins beat Becker at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-1, while Wise downed Gisser at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1.
Mount Union was up a set at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. Reichert led Turner, 6-3 and 2-0, at No. 3, while Dowling was ahead of Bush at No. 4, 6-1 and 3-1. At No. 5, Stein was leading Jeffrey, 5-3, and Johnston was up on Stankus, 5-4, at No. 6.
Wednesday's match was the final one in the Navy Blue and White for seniors Bush, Gisser, Jeffrey and Turner.
