MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College defeated rival Muskingum University 9-0 Thursday (April 2) in Ohio Athletic Conference women's tennis action. Rain forced the match indoors at the Marietta Tennis Center and the Pioneers wasted little time securing their first league win of the season.
Muskingum, with only four players in the line up, gave away three points before the match even started. Marietta then won the top two doubles matches to record to claim the team victory.
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) evened their season record at 4-4 with an 8-2 win over Laura Kalesse and Rebecca Keeley at No. 1 doubles. Kelsey Jeffrey and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) downed Kristen Chandler and Elizabeth Knauss at No. 2 by an 8-1 margin. Jeffrey and Stankus improve to 5-1 on the season as a tandem.
With the team result already decided, the Pioneers completed the sweep with four straight-set wins in the singles matches. Becker beat Kalesse at No. 1 and Gisser downed Keeley at No. 2 by identical 6-1, 6-1 tallies.
At No. 3, Turner posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Knauss, while Bush completed the shutout with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4 against Chandler.
Marietta travels to Fairmont State University on Monday (April 6) for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference match. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at
