MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College defeated Capital University by the score of 8-1 Tuesday (April 14) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's tennis action. The Pioneers improve to 4-11 on the season and 3-4 in the OAC, while the Crusaders are 2-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles.
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) were 8-1 winners at No. 1 over Corinne Hohenstein and Alyssa Trier. At No. 3,
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) posted an 8-2 decision against Taylor Jenkins and Halle Kevern.
Capital's Caitlyn McDivit and Jennie Schott beat
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) in a close match at No. 3. The Crusader duo posted a 9-8 (7-3) victory.
Becker came from one set down to defeat Trier at No. 1 singles. After losing the first set 3-6, Becker notched 6-1 and 6-4 set wins to take the match. At No. 2, Gisser downed Hohenstein, 6-1 and 6-0.
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) won the No. 3 match over Schott by the scores of 7-5, 6-7 (6-8) and 10-8. Bush posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 versus Kevern, while Jeffery beat McDivit at No. 5, 6-3, 0-6 and 10-5. Stankus completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 victort at No. 6 over Jenkins.
