MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team split a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference matches Saturday (April 11) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, site of the OAC Championships. Ohio Northern University, the OAC leader, swept the Pioneers 9-0, while Marietta downed Heidelberg University 5-4.
Ohio Northern improved to 14-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the OAC. Heidelberg slips to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in conference matches.
The Pioneers took two of the three doubles matches in the win over Heidelberg.
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) downed Sofey Fugate and Nicole Millar at No. 1 by an 8-2 margin. Becker and Gisser improved to 5-7 on the season as a tandem.
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) were 8-6 winners against Allison Costantino and Siara Patrick at No. 3. The pair is now 7-3 on the season in doubles play.
Gisser beat Millar in three sets at No. 2 singles. Gisser won the first set 6-2, while Millar took the second, 6-0. Gisser bounced back to post a 6-0 win in the third set to claim the victory.
Jeffery and Stankus were victorious at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Jeffery beat Patrick, 6-3 and 6-3, while Stankus defeated Catherine Harris, 7-6 (8-6) and 6-3. Jeffery continues to lead the Pioneers with an 8-3 singles record. Stankus evened her season slate at 5-5.
