HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Marietta College women's tennis team opened its spring trip with an 8-1 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University Monday (March 9) morning. The Pioneers fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Battling Bishops move to 1-3 overall.
Marietta's lone point came from senior
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) at No. 5 singles. Jeffrey defeated Kimberly Baione in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.
Ohio Wesleyan started the match by sweeping the doubles play. Adrienne D'Alewyn and Alex Webb downed
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) at No. 1 by the score of 8-3. At No. 2, Baione and Meghan Guthrie were 8-5 winners over
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville). Jeffery and partner
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) lost to Brooke Butterworth and Whit Lonnemann at No. 3 by the score of 8-1.
D'Alewyn, Butterworth and Webb took the top three singles matches. D'Alewyn downed Becker at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-2. Butterworth posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gisser at No. 2, while Webb defeated Turner 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 3.
OWU's other two points came at Nos. 4 and 6 singles. Lonnemann beat Bush at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-0, while Meg Ryan took the No. 6 match over Stankus, 6-4, 6-2.
