WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Otterbein University by the score of 8-1 Tuesday (March 31) afternoon. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the OAC. Otterbein is 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.
The Cardinals swept the three doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Sammi Kruger and Rylie Markle downed
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat), 8-5. Adrien Leatherwood and Emma Krummel blanked
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) at No. 2, 8-0. Sophia Navas-Davis and Brenna McCombs were 8-3 winners against
Latrice Nelson (Austintown/Austintown Fitch) and
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) at No. 3.
Marietta's lone team point came from Jeffery at No. 5 singles. Jeffery improved to 5-2 on the season with a victory over Emily Harper. Jeffery dropped the first set 2-6 before taking the second by the same score. She clinched the match with a 10-5 tally in the third.
Otterbein posted straight set victories at the other five singles positions. Kruger beat Becker at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-1. Krummel downed Gisser at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-0. At No. 3, Alyx Lynham was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Turner.
Leatherwood and Megan Locke claimed the final two points for the Cardinals. Leatherwood defeated Bush at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-0, while Locke was a 6-0, 6-2 victor against Nelson at No. 6.
