MARIETTA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace University won the top four singles matches en route to a 6-3 victory over Marietta College Saturday (March 28) afternoon in women's tennis action. Due to the unseasonably cold temperatures the match was moved inside at the Marietta Tennis Center.
Marietta (1-7 overall, 0-1 OAC) won the No. 1 doubles match but trailed 2-1 after all of the doubles were played.
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) posted an 8-5 win over Kelsey Blatt and Mackenzie Donalson to improve to 3-3 on the season at No. 1.
Baldwin Wallace's No. 2 team of Claire Watts and Mackenzi Baker were 8-5 winners against
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington). Hayley Peterson and Shannon Finkenthal downed
Latrice Nelson (Austintown/Austintown Fitch) and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) at No. 3, 8-3.
The Yellow Jackets (3-9 overall, 2-0 OAC) grabbed straight-set wins in each of the top four singles matches. In the No. 1 match, Blatt defeated Becker by a 6-3 and 6-0 count. At No. 2, Watts beat Gisser, 6-4 and 6-4. Donalson posted a 6-4 and 6-1 win over Jeffery at No. 3, while Finkenthal beat Seals at No. 4, 6-3 and 6-1.
Stankus improved to 4-3 on the season with a three-set victory over Peterson at No. 5. Stankus took the first set 7-5 before falling by the same score in the second. She bounced back to take the third set by a 6-3 margin.
Nelson picked up the Pioneers' other point with a win at No. 6. Nelson downed Kayla Eeg 6-2, 6-7 (4-7) and 6-2 for her first career collegiate singles victory.
