MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 decision to Alma College Sunday (Feb. 22) at the Marietta Tennis Center. Marietta is 0-2 overall, while Alma moves to 2-1 on the season.
Alma picked up wins at the top two doubles positions to take a 2-1 lead.
Kelsey Jeffery (The Plains/Athens) and
Hannah Stankus (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) got the Pioneers on the board with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Claudia Barajas and Amy Wood. In the top spot, Megan Solano and Morgan Waier downed
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat), 8-1. Nicki Malekadeli and Paige Pontious defeated
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) by the score of 8-1 at No. 2.
GisserThe Pioneers fell one point short winning three of the six singles matches. At No. 2, Gisser posted a 1-6, 6-3, 12-10 win over Waier. Jeffery took the No. 5 match against Barajas, 6-4 and 6-1, while Stankus beat Chloe Ramsey at No. 6 by the score of 9-7.
Alma secured the team victory with wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 4. Solano downed Becker in the top spot, 6-1 and 6-0. Malekadeli took the No. 3 match against Turner, 6-3 and 6-1, while Pontious beat Bush at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-1.
