Box ScoreMARIETTA, Ohio – The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College by the score of 9-0 Tuesday (April 8) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's tennis action. The Purple Raiders improve to 9-1 overall and remain in second place in the OAC with a 3-1 mark. The Pioneers are 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.
Mount Union led 3-0 after sweeping doubles to start the match. MacKenzie Jenkins and Megan Reichert beat
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) at No. 1, 8-1. Hannah Arvidson and Lauren Olivier were 8-3 winners over
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) at No. 2, while Taylor Dowling and Mandy Wise blanked
Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington) at No. 3, 8-0.
Gisser was the lone Pioneer to win a set in singles play as she took the first set against Dowling at No. 4. Dowling battled back to win the match 6-7 (2-7), 6-1 and 10-3.
Jenkins, Arvidson and Olivier each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in their respective matches. Jenkins downed
Beth Malony (Audubon, N.J./Audubon ) at No.1, Arvidson beat Turner at No. 3 and Olivier downed Brown at No. 4.
At No. 2 singles, Wise posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Becker. The final singles matches was a hard-fought win for Reichert as she edged Jeffrey, 6-3 and 6-4.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (April 12) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Marietta takes on Heidelberg University at 2:00 p.m. and Ohio Northern University at 5:00 p.m.
