Box ScoreADA, Ohio – The No. 7-seeded Marietta College women's tennis team fell to second-seeded Ohio Northern University by the score of 5-0 Tuesday (April 29) afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. The Pioneers finish the season 6-14 overall, while the Polar Bears advance to the semifinals with a 16-4 record.
Ohio Northern swept the doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead. The No. 3 team of Brooke Taylor and Christina Corbean defeated
Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) and
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt), 8-2, for the first point of the match.
At No. 1, Rachael Miller and Taryn Stromback downed Beth Maloney and
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) by the score of 8-0.
Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and
Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) dropped an 8-1 decision at No. 2 to Kristin Cellentani and Meghan Letizia.
The Polar Bears picked up the fourth team point of the match at No. 5 singles. Miller blanked Brown, 6-0 and 6-0. Corbean won the deciding match at No. 1 over Maloney, 6-0 and 6-1.
The other four singles matches were unfinished. Jeffrey was leading Taylor at No. 6, 6-1 and 4-0, while the Polar Bears were up a set at Nos. 2-4 when the match was stopped.
