Women's Tennis posts 6-3 win over Capital University

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marietta College women's tennis team won its second straight match with a 6-3 victory at Capital University Thursday (April 24) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital slips to 1-10 on the season and 1-6 in the OAC.

Carey Becker (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) and Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) won a hard-fought battle at No. 2 doubles to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead heading into singles. Becker and Brown defeated Jennie Schott and Corinne Hohenstein, 9-7.

Marietta's Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) and Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Kelsey Niese and Diana Lolli. The Crusaders took the No. 1 match when Alyssa Trier and Ashlin Gable downed Beth Malony (Audubon, N.J./Audubon ) and Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat), 8-4.

Becker and Brown won their respective singles match as well. Becker beat Gable at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-4, while Brown needed three sets at No. 5 to defeat Niese 3-6, 6-4 and 1-0 (10-7).

The Pioneers' other two team points came at No. 4 where Gisser was a 6-0, 6-3 winner against Schott. At No. 6, Jeffrey topped Lolli, 6-3 and 6-1.

Capital claimed wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles. Trier downed Malony at No. 1 by the score of 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3, Hohenstein got past Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville), 6-0 and 6-1.

Marietta closes out the regular season on Saturday (April 26) when John Carroll University comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. match. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at pioneers.marietta.edu.
