#8 Marietta baseball rallies to complete sweep of visiting Denison

Pioneers win opener 7-3 and take nightcap 7-6 in 11 innings

MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior center fielder John Snyder (Altoona, Pa., Altoona) legged out a two-out double and raced home on a single by sophomore third baseman Kyle Lindquist (Columbus, Worthington Kilbourne) to give #8 Marietta College a 7-6, 11-inning victory and a sweep of Mideast Region foe Denison University Tuesday (March 30) night at Don Schaly Stadium. Synder's two-out hustle helped Marietta, who captured game one 7-3, complete the comeback after it trailed by two runs heading into the eighth and by one run as it entered the bottom of the ninth. The victory pushed the Pioneers' win streak to seven games and improved their season record to 15-3. The Big Red fell to 10-9 on the spring.

Junior Britt Meador (Columbus, Worthington Kilbourne) anchored Marietta's offense, which produced 16 hits compared to 15 for Denison. Meador, who saved at least one run with a great over the shoulder catch near the wall in the sixth inning, finished 3-for-4. Snyder was one of five Pioneers to collect two hits in game two. He was joined by freshman right fielder Jordan Grilliot (Brookville, Northmont), freshman third baseman Braden Park (Oxford, Talawanda), freshman first baseman Tyler Haskin (Monroe, Monroe) and sophomore designated hitter Niko Stanislav (Olmsted Falls, Berea).

Park Smith led the Big Red with five hits, including four doubles. Aiden Lucas added three hits, including a two-run home run to give his squad the 6-4 lead in the seventh. Andrew Touhy came off the bench to hit a pair of doubles in the loss.

Denison scored a run in its first at-bat to take the lead in the night cap. The Big Red pushed its lead to 2-0 in the third. Marietta put together a four-run fourth to jump ahead 4-2. Denison fought back with single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at 4-4. The Big Red then reclaimed the lead 6-4 in the seventh. The Etta Express scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth to send the game into extra innings tied 6-6. The game remained locked at 6-6 until the 11th when Snyder and Lindquist combined to send the Pioneer crowd home happy.

Junior ace Mark Williams (Fayetteville, Perry) earned the victory in the nightcap. He scattered one hit and pitched around two walks while striking out two in two innings of relief to improve to 4-1.

Junior Casey Levens (Dayton, Centerville) made his first start of the season and finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts in five innings. Levens allowed three runs on seven hits and walked three in the no decision. Sophomore Logan Lewis (Nashport, Tri Valley) threw two key scoreless innings of relief to give his team a chance to tie the game in the late innings.

McCavitt Carter took the loss after allowing the hits to Synder and Lindquist in his only inning of work. Bob Giarratani limited Marietta's bats to five runs on 12 hits and struck out six of the first eight innings.

Marietta took the early lead of game one with with single runs in the first and second innings. Denison answered with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to take the 3-2 advantage. The Pioneers came back with two runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth before tacking on a final run in the seventh to secure the 7-3 win.

Meador finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Park also had two hits, including a double, while Grilliot collected a pair of singles in the victory.

Denison out hit Marietta 10-9 but could not overcome its four errors. Three Big Red players—Lucas, Smith and Tim Duxbury—had two hits in the loss.

Marietta sophomore Brian Gasser (New Philadelphia, Indian Valley) improved to 5-0 by throwing six solid innings against Denison. The right-hander scattered three runs on eight hits and struck out five. Lindquist earned the save, his second of the spring. Lindquist allowed just two hits and struck out two in his three innings of work.

Tyler Vaske suffered the game one loss. He was charged with six runs (three earned) on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Marietta is back in action Thursday (April 1) when it plays host to Washington & Jefferson College at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers and the Presidents will play a junior varsity game at 3 p.m. The varsity teams will then play a single, nine-inning Mideast Regional game at 6 p.m. WMOA-AM 1490 will broadcast the game.
