MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a convincing 8-1 win over rival Muskingum University Wednesday (April 19) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 3-10 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Muskingum falls to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.
With only five players in the lineup, Muskingum was forced to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches giving Marietta a 2-0 lead before the first matches were even played.
The Pioneers claimed the top two doubles matches for a 4-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles,
Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) and
Isabela Paixao (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) defeated Kara Loader and Evelyn Pauquette, 8-5. Abigail Hartshorn and
Parkar Mauk (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) downed Jane Boyer and Scarlett Martell at No. 2 by the same score.
Paixao clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pauquette at No. 1 singles. Hartshorn beat Loader at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-2, while
India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) defeated Martell at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-1.
Muskingum got its lone point of the match at No. 4 where Boyer topped Mauk, 6-3 and 6-1. At No. 5,
Elizabeth Vigue (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic) took down Kaylee Anstaett, 6-0 and 6-3.
The Pioneers now have to wait and see if the finish in the top six of the OAC standings and earn a spot in next week's conference tournament.
