Pioneer Soccer teams once again achieve prestigious academic award

8/1/2022 3:40:00 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Marietta College Men's and Women's soccer teams were recognized, in an announcement made by the United Soccer Coaches Thursday (July 28), for their exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2021-22 academic year

United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of teams whose student-athletes collectively "demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full academic year".  Both Marietta programs posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the award.  Marietta was one of 130 colleges across the nation to have both their men's and women's programs recognized.

This was the ninth consecutive year that the Marietta men's program earned the award.   "Each year in our preseason team meeting we talk about prioritizing our academic performance", says Head Coach Joe Bergin.  "Winning this award shows that this is not just a throwaway line. I am quite proud that this program is determined to be successful both on the field and in the classroom."

The Marietta women's program has earned this award for six consecutive years and Head Coach Sean Kaighin is very proud of the accomplishment.  "We take great pride in establishing academics as the number one priority and having won this award, for now 6 years in a row, is a testament of the standards and expectations that our young women hold themselves accountable!"
