MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College battled Ohio Wesleyan University to a 2-2 draw Saturday (Sept. 26) evening at Marietta Field. The tie snaps a four-match losing streak for the Pioneers as Marietta moves to 2-4-2 on the season. Ohio Wesleyan is now 1-4-2 overall.
"We did so many good things tonight and I am very proud of the effort, but we have to learn how to see games out," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We gave up two leads and while I can say it's because we are young, it ultimately still needs to be better."
Marietta grabbed an early lead with a goal in the eleventh minute of the match.
Landon Stonestreet (Hurricane, W.Va/Hurricane) sent a corner kick into the box where
Zach Kern (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) was waiting by the near post. Kern got a foot on the ball deflecting it into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Both defenses turned up the pressure keeping the score 1-0 until the final 10 minutes of the match. Three goals in less than seven minutes made for an exciting ending.
Brady Catanzarite leveled the match in the 81st minute. A nice sequence of passes led to the score as Emilio Herrera and Callum Wiggins picked up assists on the Catanzarite goal.
Four minutes later Stonestreet tallied his first collegiate goal as the freshman drilled a shot from 25 yards out. The Battling Bishops attempted to clear the ball, but the attempt wet directly to Stonestreet who unleashed an absolute bullet into the upper left corner of the net for a 2-1 Pioneer lead.
Marietta's hopes of a victory were short-lived as Ohio Wesleyan earned a corner kick two minutes later. Vittorio Renda dropped the corner into the 6-yard box where a scramble resulted in a goal for Soren Dujakovich.
Travis Lutz (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers posting six saves. Zach Hertzberg had four saves for the Battling Bishops in 90 minutes.
Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play at Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Oct. 3). Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
