MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's rowing team opened the 2022 spring racing season at home against the University of Dayton and Purdue University Saturday (March 19). Originally scheduled to race on the Ohio River, poor weather and course conditions forced a move to the Muskingum.
Conditions on the Muskingum were only moderately better, and the coaches decided to reduce the course length to 1,000-meters ending at the Washington Street Bridge. The decision was also made to only race the first and second varsity eights.
"We had a challenging wind and strong current which led us to racing an approximately 1,000-meter long course on the Muskingum River from a floating start," Marietta head coach
Abby Lord said.
In the varsity 8+ race Purdue crossed the line first in 2:56.05 with Dayton taking second (3:04.57) and Marietta third (3:09.43).
Dayton won the second varsity 8+ race with a time of 3:35.81, followed by Purdue's freshman crew (3:38.67), the Purdue second varsity shell (3:42.99) and Dayton's freshman crew (3:53.35).
Marietta is back on the water this Saturday (March 26) at the Washington College Invitational in Chestertown, Maryland.
