Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team lost its season opening match to Shawnne State University by the score of 7-2 Friday (Sept. 17) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center.
"It was a tough first match, but we played pretty well," Marietta head coach
Spencer Thorn said. "Molly had a standout performance battling to win her first match as a freshman."
The Pioneers picked up wins in the bottom two singles positions. At No. 5, Molly Ketchum downed Elizabeth Scott in three sets falling 4-6 before winning 6-4 and 10-7.
Abby Hartshorn (Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) won at No. 6 when her opponent, McKenzie Harman was forced to retire after rolling her ankle. Harman had won the first set 5-2 before retiring.
Shawnee State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles. Sara Martin Reguera and Allison Romito downed
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) and Ashton Binegar, 8-1. In the No. 2 match,
India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) and Madilyn McKitrick fell by the same score to Claire Carruthers and Scott. Lacey Urban and Lexy Urban posted an 8-1 win at No. 3 over
Payton Brinks (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) and Parkar Mauk.
Carruthers topped Thompson in the No. 1 singles match, 6-2 and 6-1. At No. 2, Martin Reguera beat Binegar, 6-0 and 6-0.
At No. 3, Flores fell to Grace Eberhard when she retired after dropping the first set 7-5 (7-5). The Bears picked up their final point at No. 4 singles where Lacey Urban downed Brinks, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marietta will host Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday (Sept. 18) at 1 p.m.
