CLEVELAND, Ohio — John Carroll University defeated Marietta College by the score of 5-0 Tuesday (May 2) in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's tennis Tournament. The Pioneers end their season with a 3-15 overall record. The Blue Streaks improve to 14-7 on the season.
After squaring off in their regular season finales on Saturday, the two teams faced each other for the second time in three days with similar results. John Carroll posted five straight-set wins in singles action to advance into the OAC semifinals this weekend.
The Blue Streaks won each of the bottom four singles matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. At No. 3, David Sinense downed
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter). Nick Siciliano beat
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) at No. 4, Tyler Cole topped
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) at No 5 and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) fell to Alex Guthrie at No. 6.
In the top spot, Jad Abdul-Aal took down
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion), 6-0 and 6-2. In the final singles match, Gustavo Garcia was leading
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 2, 6-1 and 5-1, when the match was stopped.
With five teams points secured and the victory in hand for the Blue Streaks, the three doubles matches were not played.
