MARIETTA, Ohio — Heidelberg University slipped past Marietta College 5-4 in men's tennis Saturday (April 8) morning. The Pioneers drop to 3-9 on the season and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg improves to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
The Student Princes grabbed an early lead with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Paul Claymier and Dan Driscoll beat
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) 8-5 at No. 2, while Tate Schoen and Alex Sprague edged
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 3, 9-8 (7-3).
Marietta got its first team point at No. 1 doubles.
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) were 8-6 winners over Benjamin Moore and Porus Shroff.
Moore topped Spencer at No. 1 singles, 6-1 and 6-2. Hirschfield beat Driscoll at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-2, while Shroff defeated Emerick at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-1.
The Pioneers picked up points at Nos. 4 and 6 singles. Hogan easily dispatched Sprague at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1. Watson won a three set thriller at No. 4 against Claymier. Watson took the first set 6-0 and lost the second, 2-6. He won the third set breaker 10-8 to claim the team point.
Schoen secured the team victory for the Student Princes with a 6-4, 6-1 win over DeCicco at No. 5.
