MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team lost a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference matches Friday (April 14) afternoon at the Lindner Family Tennis Center near Cincinnati. Baldwin Wallace and Ohio Northern both downed the Pioneers by the score of 9-0.
Marietta falls to 3-12 on the season and 1-5 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace improves to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Ohio Northern is 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the OAC.
BW took a 3-0 lead after doubles. The duo of Dominic Polifrone and Matt Harris won at No. 1 over
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), 8-2. At No.2, Nathan Katz and Jake Liebler downed
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) by the same score. In the No. 3 match, Brian Carano and Jake Elbin topped
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), 8-0.
Polifrone defeated Spencer at No. 1 singles, 6-1 and 6-1. At No. 2, Katz was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Hirschfield. Harris beat Emerick at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-0. Carano blanked Watson at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-0, while Liebler beat DeCicco at No. 5 by the same score. At No. 6, Elbin shut out
Michael Doran (Granville, Ohio/Granville) 6-0 and 6-0.
Ohio Northern got quick wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. David Hayman and Jake Abbot beat Emerick and Watson at No. 2, 8-1, while Tyler Frantz and Cody Hurley downed DeCicco and Hogan at No. 3, 8-0. In the No. 1 match, Tim Kargl and Andrew Garcia edged Spencer and Hirschfield, 9-8 (7-1).
Spencer gave Kargl all he could handle at No. 1 singles before falling, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-3). Hayman and Garcia posted 6-1, 6-0 wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Hayman beat Hirschfield and Garcia downed Emerick.
At No. 4, Abbott defeated Watson, 6-1 and 6-0. Frantz posted the same score in his win against DeCicco at No. 5. In the final singles match, Lance Brown topped Hogan at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1.
