Men's Tennis falls in Beren Invitational consolation

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team lost a pair of matches Saturday (March 25) afternoon in the Beren Invitational hosted by the Pioneers. Mount St. Joseph defeated Marietta, 6-3, in the second round and Defiance downed the Pioneers, 9-0, in the consolation round.

Marietta is 3-7 on the season. Defiance is 6-6 overall, while Mount St. Joseph is 2-1 overall.

Mount St. Joseph took a 2-1 lead after three hard-fought battles. Marietta's No. 1 team of Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and Shance Spencer were 8-5 winners over Nathan Clark and Guy Watkins.

MSJ edged out wins in the other two doubles matches. At No. 2, Ian Stutz and Cooper Wade downed Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-4, while Ben Montez and Cody Tallon beat Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 3, 8-5.

Spencer and Watson were victorious at Nos. 1 and 4 singles, respectively. Spencer beat Clark, 6-4 and 6-1, while Watson downed Stutz, 6-1 and 7-5.

Mount St. Joseph won the other four singles matches. At No. 2, Hirschfield lost to Wade, 2-6, 6-3 and 1-0 (10-6). Watkins won at No. 3 against Emerick, 6-1 and 6-1. At No. 5, Montez defeated DeCicco, 6-2 and 6-4, while Tallon took the No. 6 match from Hogan, 6-1 and 6-1.

In another round of close doubles matches, Defiance managed to sweep the Pioneers. James Demeo and Adam Swicher were 8-6 winners at No. 1 over Hirschfield and Spencer. At No. 2, Daniel Fabelo and Tory Savage beat Emerick and Watson, 8-6, while Brian Kurtz and Eline Widman posted an 8-4 win at No. 3 against Michael Doran (Granville, Ohio/Granville) and Hogan.

In singles play, Demeo, Swisher and Savage won Nos. 1-3, respectively. Demeo took down Spencer, 8-3. Swisher was an 8-1 winner over Hirschfield, while Savage beat Emerick by the same score.

Widman downed Watson at No. 4, 8-6. DeCicco fell to Kurtz at No. 5, 8-0, while Nathan Height beat Doran, 8-0, at No. 6.

Thomas More beat Mount St. Joseph 5-0 in the championship match. The complete Beren Invitational results are below.
