HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Marietta College dropped a men's tennis match to St. Mary's College of Maryland by the score of 9-0 Wednesday (March 15) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 2-4 on the season, while St. Mary's improves to 6-5 overall.
The Seahawks grabbed two quick points at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Ethan Garren and James Loftis were 8-0 winners at No. 2 over
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), while Ron Stith and Kyle Van Winter downed
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 3, 8-1.
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) lost a hard-fought battle at No. 1 doubles. Jonathan Gorel and Connor McKissick escaped with an 8-5 win completing the doubles sweep.
Hirschfield and McKissick tangled at No. 3 singles as well. McKissick came away with the win, 6-2 and 6-4.
Gorel downed Spencer at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 2, Garren posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Watson.
St. Mary's got straight-set wins in each of the bottom three singles matches. At No. 4, Loftis beat Emerick, 6-0 and 6-0. Hogan fell to Stith at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-0, while Zach Talamonti defeated
Michael Doran (Granville, Ohio/Granville) at No. 6, 6-1 and 6-1.
