HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Marietta College men's tennis team posted a thrilling 5-4 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College Tuesday (March 14) afternoon. The Pioneers are 2-3 on the season.
Marietta led 2-1 after doubles. The Pioneers earned a point at No. 3 by default. Lutheran's No. 1 team of Derek Sallmann and Ben Wordell beat
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and Shance Spencer, 8-4. MC's No. 2 team of
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) came roaring back from 5-7 down to win four straight and give the Pioneers the lead heading into singles.
Wisconsin Lutheran gave away the No. 6 singles point by default. Sallmann downed Spencer at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-1, while Wordell beat Watson at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-0. Jake Larson made it 4-3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Hirschfield evened the score at 4-4 with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles. Hirschfield took the first set, 6-4. Wordell evened the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. After trailing 6-8 in the super tiebreaker, Hirschfield earned the team point with a 10-8 win in the breaker.
Emerick earned the team victory with a straight-set win at No. 4 over Stellick, 6-0 and 6-2.
Earlier in the week, the Pioneer men dropped 9-0 decisions to Carroll University and Susquehanna University.
