CLEVELAND, Ohio — Top seeded John Carroll University defeated No. 8 seed Marietta College 5-0 in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Wednesday (May 4) afternoon. The Pioneers finish the season with a record of 10-17, setting a program record for wins. The Blue Streaks improve to 12-7 on the season.
The Blue Streaks picked up a quick point at No. 3 doubles where Tyler Cole and Nick Siciliano downed
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue), 8-0. The No. 1 team of Jad Abdul-Aal and David Sinense beat
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-1, for a 2-0 JCU lead.
Marietta's No. 2 tandem of
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) dropped a hard-fought battle to Scott Adsit and Dillon O'Brien, 8-4.
Sinense and Alex Guthrie put the match away with straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Sinense topped Spencer, 6-0 and 6-0, while Guthried beat Kingson by the same score.
The other four singles matches were stopped once JCU secured the team victory. The Blue Streaks were up one set in each of the four incomplete matches.
John Carroll advances to the semifinals on Friday where they will face No. 4 seed Capital, a 5-2 winner over No. 5 seed Mount Union in the quarterfinals.
