ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College 8-1 Tuesday (April 5) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis action. The Pioneers fall to 9-10 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Mount Union moves to 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The Purple Raiders took an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles play. In the top spot, Rob DeMarco and Jeff Williams beat
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-1. At No. 2,
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) and
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) dropped an 8-3 decision to Jackson Schneider and Matt Bringman. Kyle Hicken and Bryce Payne topped
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) and
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) at No. 3, 8-4.
Mount Union posted straight-set win in the first three singles matches. DeMarco beat Schaeffer at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-2. Williams downed Spencer at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-1, while Schneider dropped Kingson at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-0.
Marietta's lone point came at No. 4 singles where Sigman topped Bringman in three sets, 6-4, 1-6 and 10-3.
Hicken was a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Stone at No. 5 and Tyler Tareshawty defeated Adkinson at No. 6, 6-3 and 6-1.
