MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-0 loss to John Carroll University Saturday (April 30) afternoon. Rain caused the match to be stopped before all of the matches were completed.
Marietta falls to 10-16 overall and 1-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and will the No. 8 seed in next week's tournament. John Carroll improves to 11-7 on the season and wins the OAC regular season with a perfect 8-0 record.
The Pioneers will open OAC Tournament play at John Carroll on Wednesday (May 4) at 3:30 p.m.
The Blue Streaks blanked Marietta in all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Jad Abdul-Aal and Alex Guthrie beat
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-0. Scott Adsit and Dillon O'Brien downed
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) by the same score at No. 2, while Tyler Cole and Nick Siciliano topped
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown), 8-0 as well.
Guthrie and Siciliano each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles to secure the victory for John Carroll before rain halted the match. Guthrie defeated Spencer at No. 2 and Siciliano beat Kingson at No. 3.
At No. 1, Abdul-Aal led Schaeffer, 6-4 and 3-0, while Cole was ahead of Sigman at No. 4, 6-0 and 3-2.
The Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches never started.
