MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team set a program record with its tenth win of the season Sunday (April 17) afternoon at the Lindner Tennis Center. The Pioneers blanked Muskingum University, 5-0, in a nonconference match.
Earlier in the day, Ohio Northern University posted a 7-2 decision over the Pioneers. Marietta now stands 10-14 overall and 1-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Northern is 5-10 on the season and 2-3 in the OAC. Muskingum is 0-12 overall.
Marietta built a 3-0 lead after sweeping the Muskies in doubles.
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) were 8-0 winners at No. 1 over Trayton McHale and Paul Van Horn. In the No. 2 match,
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) beat Ben Winland and Gene Montgomery, 8-2.
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) topped Levi Hall and Nicolas Montero at No. 3, 8-4.
Sigman and Stone posted straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Sigman downed Van Horn, 6-0 and 6-0, while Stone beat Winland, 6-0 and 6-1.
The other four singles matches were unfinished.
In the match against Ohio Northern, Marietta got points from Stone and Adkinson. Stone defeated Alex Genbauffe at No. 5 singles, 7-5 and 6-1. Adkinson took the No. 6 match from Nathan Knodel, 2-6, 7-5 and 11-9.
