Men's Tennis drops a pair of OAC matches

MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference matches Saturday (April 16) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. OAC leader Baldwin Wallace downed the Pioneers 9-0 in the morning and Heidelberg posted a 6-3 win over Marietta in the afternoon.

The Pioneers slip to 9-13 overall and 1-4 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace improved to 19-1 overall and 4-0 in the OAC, while Heidelberg moves to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Marietta's three points against Heidelberg came from Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) and Andrew Stone in singles and the doubles team of Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington). Sigman downed Dan Driscoll at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-0. Stone beat Paul Claymier at No. 5, 6-3 and 6-1.

Adkinson and Schaeffer were 8-2 winners over Driscoll and Tyler Flickinger at No. 2 doubles.

Heidelberg won the other two doubles matches. In the top spot, Jonathan Long and Benjamin Moore defeated Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Stone, 8-4. At No. 3, Claymier and Kyle Simpson posted an 8-6 decision over Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Sigman.

Long, Moore and Flickinger each posted straight-set wins in the top three singles spots, respectively. Long beat Schaeffer, 7-5 and 6-0. Moore downed Spencer, 6-1 and 6-1, while Flickinger topped Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown), 6-0 and 6-2.

In the final singles match, Simpson won a thriller against Adkinson at No. 6. Adkinson won the first set 6-4 and Simpson took the second, 6-0. Simpson then finished the match with an 11-9 win in the third.

Baldwin Wallace showed why it is the top team in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets swept the three doubles matches and then posted straight-set wins in all six singles matches for the 9-0 victory.

Marietta is back in action on Sunday (April 17) for an 8 a.m. match against Ohio Northern University at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
