HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches on its first day of competition on spring break. The Pioneers fell to Eastern Nazarene College, 8-1, and then dropped a hard fought 5-4 decision to Defiance College.
Marietta (3-6 overall) got its lone point against Eastern Nazarene (4-2 overall) from
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) at No. 3 doubles. The duo posted an 8-5 win over Andres Biondi and Stephan Crooks.
The Lions won the top two doubles matches with Alex Partyka and Vladislav Tolmachev beating
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) in the top spot, 8-1. At No. 2, Shaw Campbell and Kevin Paterno defeated
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-5.
Partyka, Tolmachev and Paterno posted wins in the first three singles spots as well. Partyka downed Schaeffer, 6-1 and 6-2. Tolmachev was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Spencer and Paterno beat Kingson, 6-2 and 6-1.
Campbell took the No. 4 match from Sigman, 2-6, 6-0 and 11-9. Andres Biondi beat Stone at No. 5, 7-5 and 6-4, while Brandon Jenkins beat Adkinson at No. 6, 6-1 and 7-6 (8-6).
Against Defiance (3-4 overall), the Pioneers fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. James Demeo and Adam Swisher beat Schaeffer and Spencer at No. 1 by the score of 8-6. Tory Savage and Eline Widman were 9-8 (7-2) winners over Kingson and Stone at No. 2, while Adkinson and Sigman got Marietta on the board with an 8-1 win over Daniel Fabelo and Ricardo Girona at No. 3.
In singles it was the bottom of Marietta's lineup providing the points. Sigman downed Widman at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-1. At No. 5, Stone was an 8-3 winner over Diego Sanchez and
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) outlasted Fabelo at No. 6, 3-6, 7-6 (8-5), 16-14.
Defiance secured the team victory with wins at Nos. 1-3. Demeo edged Scheffer at No. 1, 6-4, 3-6 and 10-5. Swisher beat Spencer at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1, while Savage defeated Kingson at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-2.
