MARIETTA, Ohio — Doubles partners
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) and
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) each won three-set thrillers in singles to secure a 5-4 come from behind victory over Bethany College Thursday (March 24) in men's tennis action. The Pioneers improve to 9-8 on the season, while Bethany slips to 1-1 overall.
Trailing 4-3 in team points, Sigman leveled the match with a win over Marcus Hooks at No. 4 singles. Sigman took the first set, 6-3, and lost the second, 5-7. But he recovered to take the third set, 6-4.
Adkinson dropped the first set, 5-7, at No. 6 singles to Jack Waters. With the match on the line, he bounced back to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-3, securing the victory for the Pioneers.
Adkinson and Sigman beat Hooks and Waters at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, for Marietta's first point of the match.
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) made it 2-0 with an 8-5 win against Kyle Booker and Chris Ray at No. 2.
In the top spot,
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Andrew Stone came from behind to force a tiebreaker against Drake Berlin and Rhone Thrash. But the Bison duo took the breaker for the 9-8 (9-7) win.
Each team won three of the six singles matches accounting for a back and forth team score throughout the afternoon. Booker beat Kingson at No. 3, 6-4 and 6-3 to even the team score at 2-2.
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) put MC in front with a 6-4 and 7-6 (7-5) win over Thrash at No. 1.
Bethany picked up the next two points for a 4-3 lead. At No. 2, Berlin beat Spencer, 7-5, 0-6 and 6-3, while Ray was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 5 versus Stone.
