Men's Tennis goes 2-1 on Sunday

MARIETTA, Ohio — It was a full day of tennis for the Marietta College men's team as the Pioneers played three matches Sunday (March 20). Marietta lost to Defiance College 5-2, before defeating Thomas More College 8-1 and the College of Mount St. Joseph 6-3.

The Pioneers improve to 8-8 overall on the season.

Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) led the Pioneers going 5-0 on the day. Sigman and Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) won the No. 3 doubles match against all three opponents. Sigman also posted straight-set wins at No. 4 singles against Thomas More and Mount St. Joseph. In addition, he was up one set against Defiance when the match was stopped.

In the 5-2 loss to Defiance (5-5 overall), Marietta dropped two of the three doubles matches with Adkinson and Sigman posting an 8-2 win over Daniel Fabelo and Nathan Height. Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg) accounted for MC's other point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Height.

Marietta swept the doubles matches against Thomas More (2-2 overall). Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Stone downed Sam Lewis and Sergio Pascual at No. 1, 8-6. Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) were 8-3 winners at No. 2 against Jalen Clark and Christian Gil, while Adkinson and Sigman downed Brandon Lorentz and Hannes Snorrason at No. 3, 8-0.

Schaeffer beat Gil at No. 1 singles, 6-1 and 6-0. Sigman and Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) each recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Sigman beat Snorrason and Leisure took down Lotentz. Stone earned a forfeit at No. 6 and Spencer took the No. 2 match by the score of 8-3 over Lewis.

Once again the Pioneers swept the three doubles matches against Mount St. Joseph (2-2 overall). Spencer and Stone beat Cody Hurley and Cooper Wade 9-7 in the top spot. Kingson and Schaeffer posted an 8-1 win at No. 2 versus Ian Stutz and Guy Watkins, while Adkinson and Sigman were 8-5 winners over Ben Montez and Cody Tallon at No. 3.

MC picked up wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 singles. Schaeffer was leading Hurley at No. 1, 6-1 and 1-0, when Hurley retired. Sigman downed Watkins at No. 4, 6-0 and 7-5, while Stone beat Montez at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-1.

Mount St. Joseph earned points from Wade at No. 2, who beat Spencer, 4-6, 6-3 and 10-5. Stutz defeated Kingson in three sets at No. 3, 4-6, 6-0 and 6-4. Tallon was a 6-4, 6-2 winner against Adkinson at No. 6.
