MARIETTA, Ohio — Playing for the first time in a week, the Marietta College men's tennis team made quick work of rival Muskingum University Friday (March 18) afternoon. The Pioneers posted a 9-0 shutout over the Muskies to open Ohio Athletic Conference play.
Marietta (6-7 overall, 1-0 OAC) opened the match with a sweep of the doubles.
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg) downed Trayton McHale and Ben Winland in the top spot, 8-2.
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) posted the same score at No. 2 over Levi Hall and Gene Montgomery. In the final doubles match,
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) were 8-1 winners against Rio Hosoi and Nicolas Montero.
The Pioneers posted all straight-set wins over Muskingum (0-3 overall, 0-1 OAC) in the singles matches. At No. 1, Schaeffer blanked McHale, 6-0 and 6-0. Spencer defeated Montgomery at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1, while Kingson beat Winland at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-0.
It was more of the same in the bottom half of the lineup. Sigman was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Montero at No. 4 and Stone downed Hall at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-2. Leisure completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 against Hosoi.
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday (March 20) for a triple-header. Marietta plays Defiance College at 8:30 a.m., Thomas More College at 11:00 a.m. and the College of Mount St. Joseph at 2:00 p.m.
