HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Marietta College men's tennis team came out on the friendly side of a 5-4 decision Thursday (March 10). The Pioneers downed Drew University improving to 4-6 overall. Drew slipped to 2-2 on the season.
Marietta's bottom two doubles teams each posted victories to put the Pioneers up 2-1 heading into singles play. All three doubles matches ended with the same 8-4 score.
Muhammad Kingson (Williamstown, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville, Ohio/Marlington) downed Will Morrison and Chris Morville at No. 2, while
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) beat Chris Thompson and Kevin Shulca at No. 3.
In the top doubles match, Drew's Adam Clark and Vineet Vemulapally defeated
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg).
It was the bottom of the singles lineup that bested Drew as well. Sigman, Stone and Adkinson each posted straight set victories at Nos. 4-6, respectively. Sigman downed Shulca, 6-1 and 6-2. Stone was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Morville, while Adkinson beat Erdi Demirbulakli, 6-3 and 6-0.
At No. 1, Vemulapally posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against Schaeffer. Clark beat Spencer at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-2 and Morrison took the No. 3 match from Kingson, 6-0 and 6-1.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday (March 11) with a 2:00 p.m. match against Lawrence Tech and a 7:00 p.m. match against Penn State-Behrend.
