ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College downed Marietta College 7-2 Tuesday (Sept. 8) afternoon in men's tennis action. The Senators start the season 1-0, while the Pioneers fall to 0-2 overall.
Davis & Elkins swept the doubles play for an early 3-0 lead. Jack Clifton and Thomas Judd were 8-6 winners over
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and Shane Spencer at No. 1. Vincent Hamon and Tristram Spitsnaugle beat Muhammad Kingson and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) at No. 2, while Guilherme Hubsch and Samual Vallieres downed
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue/Bellevue) and
Jon Fitzwater (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) at No. 3 by the same 8-1 score.
Marietta picked up wins in the bottom two singles. At No. 5,
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) defeated Travis Cleaver, 7-5 and 6-2. Adkinson beat Blake Boswell at No. 6, 6-1 and 6-2.
Clifton took the No. 1 singles match by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1 over Spencer. At No. 2, Vallieres beat Sigman, 6-2 and 6-2, while Hunsch downed Andrew Stone at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2. At No. 4, Jonathan Gainer defeated Kingson, 6-1 and 6-1.
