WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College men's tennis team won a pair of matches Saturday (Sept. 26) at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Washington and Jefferson College. The Pioneers defeated W&J 5-4 and then downed Frostburg State University 6-3. Marietta improves to 3-2 on the season.
Washington and Jefferson (0-1 overall) grabbed the early 2-1 lead after doubles play. Marietta's
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and Shane Spencer won the No. 1 doubles match over Sean Carrick and Joshua St. Clair, 8-4. At No. 2, Ryan Becker and Greg Smith posted an 8-2 win over
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue/Bellevue) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca). Josh Hnat and Xhoni Qyteza were 8-4 winners at No. 3 against Muhammad Kingson and
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg).
Marietta bounced back to take four of the six singles matches for the victory. Schaeffer and Spencer won at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Schaeffer beat Carrick, 6-4 and 6-1, while Spencer defeated St. Clair, 6-1 and 6-2.
Andrew Stone downed Qyteza at No. 4, 6-4 and 6-1. Marietta's final point came at No. 6 where Adkinson beat Hnat, 6-2 and 7-6 (12-10).
W&J got wins at No. 3 where Smith defeated Sigman, 6-3 and 7-5, and from Becker at No. 5 who beat Kingson, 6-1 and 6-0.
The Pioneers were leading 2-1 against Frostburg State (1-1 overall) after doubles. At No. 1, Schaeffer and Spencer beat Arun Pant and Teron Tyre, 8-3. Adkinson and Leisure blanked David Kramer and Jack Rost at No. 3, 8-0. Frostburg won at No. 2 where Marcus Bowers and Shasta Braithwaite were 8-4 winners over Sigman and Stone.
Spencer claimed Marietta's first singles point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 against Tyre. Sigman finished next at No. 3 with a win over Pant, 6-3 and 7-5. The clinching point came from Adkinson at No. 6. Adkinson downed Kramer, 6-2 and 6-0. Schaeffer added a point at No. 1 singles. Schaeffer beat Braithwaite, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-5).
Bowers and Rost took wins at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Bowers defeated Stone, 6-4 and 6-3, while Rost beat Kingson, 2-6, 6-1 and 10-5.
Marietta wraps up the fall season on Sunday (Sept. 27) with a 4:00 p.m. home match against Franciscan University. Fans can follow all the Pioneer teams all year long at
