WAYNESBURG, Pa. — The Marietta College men's tennis team defeated Waynesburg University 6-3 Thursday (Sept. 17) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 1-2 on the season, while Waynesburg falls to 0-1 overall.
Waynesburg started the match in a hole having to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches. The teams split the remaining two doubles matches giving Marietta a 3-1 lead.
In the No. 1 doubles match,
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and Shane Spencer downed Jonah Cooper and Tim Harris, 8-5. The Yellow Jackets got on the board with an 8-6 win at No. 2 as Andy Brunette and Josh Denham beat
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue/Bellevue) and
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg).
The Pioneers won three of the five singles matches getting wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 4. Schaeffer took the No. 1 match from Harris, 6-3 and 6-0. At No. 3,
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) beat Brunette, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg) posted a straight-set win at No. 4 over Denham, 7-5 and 6-1.
Cooper and Adam McKnight grabbed points for Waynesburg. Cooper downed Spencer at No. 2, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (15-13). At No. 5, McKnight beat Adkinson, 7-5 and 6-3.
