PEPPER PIKE, Ohio — Top-seeded John Carroll University downed Marietta College by the score of 5-0 Tuesday (April 28) afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's tennis Tournament. The Pioneers, seeded eighth, finish the season with a 4-14 record. The Blue Streaks improve to 9-11 overall.
John Carroll swept all three doubles matches for an early lead. The No. 1 team of Jad Abdul-Aal and Kyle Mollison downed
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca), 8-1. At No. 2, Scott Adsit and Dillon O'Brien beat
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue/Bellevue) and
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-0. Alex Guthrie and Tyler Cole downed
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg) and Jon Fitwater at No. 3 by the same 8-0 score.
Abdul-Aal picked up JCU's fourth point when Schaeffer retired at No. 1 singles. Abdul-Aal was leading after winning the first set, 6-0. Guthrie sealed the team victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Adkinson at No. 3.
The other four singles matches were unfinished. John Carroll was up a set in all four. At No. 2, Mollison was leading Sigman, 6-0 and 5-0. Adsit led Leisure at No. 4, 6-1 and 3-0. At No. 5, Cole was ahead of Stone, 6-3 and 1-0, while O'Brien was leading Fitzwater at No. 6, 6-0 and 3-1.
