NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team notched its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season with a 9-0 shutout of rival Muskingum University Thursday (April 23) afternoon. The Pioneers move to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 0-12 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.
With only five players in the lineup, Muskingum started the match down 2-0. The Muskies forfeited the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.
Marietta made it a 4-0 lead after posting identical 8-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. In the top spot,
Alex Schaeffer (Louisville/Marlington) and
Tanner Sigman (Winfield, W.Va./Poca) bested Trayton McHale and Ben Winland, while
Chase Leisure (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Brendan Adkinson (Bellevue/Bellevue) defeated Andrew Alexander and Kenta Suzuki at No. 2.
The Pioneers were nearly perfect in singles play winning four of the five matches played, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 1, Schaeffer beat McHale, while Sigman blanked Winland at No. 2.
Adkinson and
Drew Stone (Davisville, W.Va./Parkersburg) swept their opponents at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Adkinson downed Alexander and Stone defeated Gene Montgomery.
The final point came from
Justin McGinnis (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) at No. 3. McGinnis downed Suzuki, 6-0 and 6-1.
Marietta wraps up the regular season on Saturday (April 25) with a 5:00 p.m. match at John Carroll University.
